rain > 90 days a year soluble minerals (plants store the nutrients in themselves rather than getting it from the soil)
contains laterites, compounds of aluminum & iron that
bake into concrete-like slabs when exposed to the sun by deforestation
TEMPERATURE: DOMINANT GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES:
20-34 degrees Celsius mainly near the equator: Central/South America
humidity between 77-88% Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia
usually 2 seasons: dry and wet tall trees & vegetation (forest floor, understory, canopy,
emergent layer)
WIND PATTERNS: SOLAR RADIATION:
little wind except for the top most, emergent layer actually helps reduce the amount of solar radiation reflected into the atmosphere, thus keeping the climate stable
LIMITING FACTORS:
sunlight; the dense leaf canopy shades the forest
beneath it (about 3 % of light filters in through the canopies)
